After spending late Sunday morning and early afternoon shopping at the flea market and down Melrose Ave, Nadya and I were famished. Luckily we ran into M cafe for lunch.

M cafe has a very vegan and vegetarian friendly menu with an extensive range of options; the cafe specializes in macrobiotic fare.  Following a Macrobiotic diet simply means adhearing to a diet of grains and veggies, while abstaining from processed foods, as well as chewing food thorougly as opposed to rushed meals and chiding from over eating.  Additionally, following a Macrobiotic diet usually consists of eating foods that are in season.  As Macrobiotics often eat a lot of vegetables, grains and legumes,  this diet is highly compatible with vegan and vegetarian food choices.

The staff at M Cafe are very friendly and eager to guide you through the array of options as well as their meanings. I ordered the “Big Macro Combo” and a side of  “Creamy Coleslaw”. The “Big Macro Burger” consists of a whole brown rice and vegetable burger. It came with a  special Aioli sauce, lettuce , soy mozzarella, tomato, pickles, onions and sprouts on a house baked whole wheat bun. Sweet potato fries, mixed greens and a choice of iced mint green tea or lemonade came with the combo. I chose the lemonade. The “Big Macro Burger” was very savory, the pattie had a nice texture;not typical of most vegan patties. The veggies were fresh and well seasoned. Their Creamy Coleslaw was a definite winner and went quite well with the rest of the meal. The Aioli  sauce complemented the fries quite well. Nadya ordered the “Madras Tempeh Wrap”. Masala- baked tempeh, brown basmati rice, toasted almonds, raisins frizzled onions and crisp veggies were wrapped in whole wheat lavash bread topped with soy yogurt dressing in the”Madras Wrap”. She thoroughly enjoyed this wrap with its hints of turmeric and curry powder. The bold taste of the “Madras” can best be described as traditional indian cuisine with a contemporary macrobiotic twist. M Cafe uses fresh seasonings, vegetables, and breads of the finest quality to complete their eclectic menu.

For dessert we shared a vegan brownie from Baby Cakes served at M cafe. Baby Cakes Bakery was started in New York City but has since become incredibly popular throughout the country. They cater to people with dietary restrictions and never compromise taste for those restrictions. Their desserts are refined sugar-free, gluten-free, wheat-free , soy-free, casein free, egg-free, vegan and kosher! Absolutely divine desserts, maintaining a non-conformative mantra of keeping away from processed and artificial sweeteners, its no wonder M cafe serves these delectable little treats! Their newest location in downtown LA supplies M cafe with very special vegan and allergy friendly sweets. The desserts at baby cakes are very inspired and delicious without the guilt or food allergens. In our next review we will discuss their bakery!

M Cafe is not to be missed. After a long shopping venture down Melrose I highly recommend this eatery. With their knack for healthy vegan macrobiotic foods and emphasis on flavor they are surely not to be missed. Check out their menu and locations here :

About govegetarianista86

After transitioning to a meatless diet two years ago, Lauren and I had no choice but to learn lots of great vegetarian recipes---and fast---after all, we always loved great food. The reason for our decision to omit meat and most dairy products from our lives was quite simple. A vegetarian diet is healthier, kinder, and ironically much cheaper than one with meat. We created this website to show that being a vegetarian is one of the easiest and most rewarding lifestyles to partake in, and hope that both vegetarians and aspiring vegetarians alike will visit Go-Vegetarianista habitually. :) About the authors: Nadya Rousseau is an actor/writer/producer residing in Beverly Hills, CA. She moved to Los Angeles almost five years ago at the age of nineteen to pursue her career and to escape the boredom of her small town. As maintaining a svelte figure is often pivotal in the entertainment industry, she finds she has no trouble staying slim and healthy as a vegetarian. In addition to loving good food and helping others, she enjoys engaging in sarcastic banter--keep an eye out for her frequent sardonic jokes--you'll surely be amused!! Lauren Rheims, is a native of Pomona, CA, and now resides in Beverly Hills, CA. She is a fashion and nature photographer, and of course loves shooting pictures of super yummy food! Lauren at first was apprehensive about becoming vegetarian, being of Creole descent, enjoying delicious seafood and meat, was more or less second nature. However after she discovered just how easy it was to enjoy the same delectable meals sans meat, she was thrilled! Lauren is excited to show everyone the simplicity and allure of vegetarian fare--and just how fun it can be!
